Important to Attend - Public Meeting: Monday, July 10, 2017 at 3pm
Location: Medina County Board of Elections - 3800 Stonegate Dr., Medina, OH
(Please plan to arrive ten minutes early) RE: MEDINA COUNTY CHARTER INITIATIVE
At this meeting the Medina County Board of Elections board members will certify the petition signatures and decide whether they will permit the Medina County Charter initiative on the November 2017 ballot.
Please plan to attend and support the rights of Medina County residents. Putting this initiative on the ballot only means that “the people of Medina County” should have a voice. It is our duty as residents of Medina County to make our voices heard and to fight for what’s right for our families, our children, our future, our world. It is undemocratic for those in control of “governing” the people to block the people from exercising their constitutional rights. This is our chance to participate in “Direct Democracy”. Remember also, when Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted tried to block the Charter previously, the Ohio Supreme Court slapped his hand and advised him that he had no authority to block Charters based on their content and ruling on their constitutionality. The Court made it clear that it was a judicial function. Instead the initiative was kept off the ballot based on a technicality.
THESE ARE IMPORTANT NEXT STEPS THAT WE SHOULD BE TAKING BEFORE THE JULY 10th BOARD OF ELECTIONS MEETING:
1. Make sure the Board of Elections meeting is packed with people who will go up to the microphone when they ask for public comment and one after another state: “Put the Charter on the ballot and let the people vote”.
2. See if any elected officials (Township Trustees, Council Members, etc.) will attend the BOE meeting and also state: “Let the people vote on the charter”. They do not have to publicly state that they support the Charter at this meeting, just that they support placing it on the ballot. Or, see if they would be willing to be included supporting the Charter going on the ballot in a Press Release.
3. Use the 4th of July holiday as the theme …. we celebrate democracy and yet we have had our right to local democracy squashed two years in a row by the very state government that currently has all control over our county.
4. Try to get Letters to the Editor or Op-Eds in local papers informing voters of the Charter petitions and how the process should work and urging people to attend the Board of Elections meeting or contact the Board of Elections board members by phone calls and/or emails to support putting the charter on the ballot.
